What Would We Play in a Pinoy Squid Game?
Squid Game, Netflix's latest Korean drama, is about 456 desperate individuals vying for the 45.6B won prize money, at the risk of losing their own lives. Contestants need to play 6 children's games to win and to be able to pay their debts. Innocent kids' games became deadly in the race to win the large prize.
While watching, I can't help but think, what would we play if we ever have a Pinoy version of the Squid Game?
The Recruiter's Game
Squid Game: Ddakji
Pinoy: Pogs
Like Ddakji, Pogs is played by slamming the stack of "milk caps". Each player keeps the milk caps that land face-up after they have thrown. Those that stay face-down will be restacked for the next player. When no milk caps remain in the stack, the player with the most pogs win.
To make it squid game-like, we need a Gong Yoo-like recruiter to make it easier to recruit. Someone as handsome perhaps? Only a few pogs will be used, if the recruiter gets more pogs facing up on the first try, you get a slap. And if you get more pogs face-up, you get PhP1000.
Squid Game: Red Light, Green Light
Pinoy: Pepsi 7-Up
Pepsi 7 Up is similar game as the Red Light Green Light as a taya face opposite the players. When he/she says Pepsi, players move near to him/her as close as possible. When he says 7Up, the players have to stop moving. A player who reaches the taya first taps him/her on the shoulder and then they must run back to their base before they get caught and become the next taya. All the players who gets back to their base without being tapped by the taya gets to live.
Squid Game: Tug of War
Pinoy: Hilahang Lubid
Not much difference here. Rule is just to pull the rope along with the members of the opposing team to their side. The team who pulls the other team to their area wins the game and gets to live.
Squid Game: Marbles
Pinoy: Jolens
In the drama, they can play any game involving the marbles given to them, as long one of them gets all the marbles of his opponent. For us Pinoys, the most common is when you put all your marbles and your opponents' inside a circle. You take a shot with the goal of knocking marbles out of the circle. All marbles you get to knock out you can keep. If no marble gets out of the circle, the other player takes a turn. The player with the most marble won gets to live.
Squid Game: Stepping Stone
Pinoy: Piko
You have to have a pamato. It should be thrown inside the lines starting from the number 1 area, then 2, 3, etc. You then hop in all the numbered areas, go back, get your pamato and continue playing until the last part of the piko area. Be careful not to touch the lines when you throw the pamato and when you hop in. If you do, you don't get to live.
Squid Game: Squid Game
Pinoy: Patintero
Patintero is a simple game where your team have to cross the field back and forth without being touched by the guards. Guards stand on their assigned lines and is allowed to move only on his line with his feet always touching that line. A team leader called the patotot moves along the central line crossing the whole play area. Any passer who gets trough without being touched wins.
As this is the last game with only 2 players left, that person who gets through, out of the play area wins the game. Like squid game, this can become bloody as well to determine the winner.
Have you thought of any other game?
