Why Was The Philippines Mentioned in Squid Game?

It is not unusual hearing the Philippines mentioned in Korean dramas. And if you happen to watch the hit Netflix series Squid Game, for sure you were surprised to hear our country mentioned as well.

In episode 2, gangster Jang Deok Su (played by Heo Sung Tae), it was mentioned that his huge gambling debts were amassed in casinos in the Philippines.

According to an exclusive interview by Preview, Hwang Dong Hyuk, the Director said that he had an experience of visiting a casino in the Philippines. Which is why he thought Deok Su would have lost all his money there. Also, he mentioned recent events involving other Korean personalities. According to him,
We also have heard some news reports about some Korean celebrities and athletes who gambled in casinos in the Philippines, and lost a lot of money.

He was asked if actual Filipinos were included in that scene where Deok Su was confronted.

In the scene, the Filipino gang came to Korea to collect their money. The actors who were portrayed as the Filipinos in the second episode were not all Filipinos, some of them were from other Southeast Asian countries, and some of them were Korean.

Squid Game stars Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, Wi Ha Joon and Jung Ho Yeon with cameos from Gong Yoo and Lee Byung Hun.
