Two Theories on Squid Game Answered - On Gong Yoo's Character and on the Color of the Tiles on Ddakji
We've had our many theories and questions on some of Squid Game's many stories and characters. And two of those are the back story of the salesman, played by Gong Yoo; and the choosing of the blue or red tile on his recruitment game, ddakji. Well, the drama's writer and director have revealed the answers in an interview with media The Chosun Ilbo.
We were all surprised to see the cameo of the Goblin and Train to Busan star on the first episode of the drama as The Salesman. He met with Seong Gi Hun at the train station and challenged him to a game of ddakji. After which, he invited him to participate in the deadly Squid Game.
According to Director Hwang Dong Yuk he observed that the viewers were even more creative than him when he read about the theories. But he explained that when he was writing on the script, he decided that The Salesman was a former staff member from the game who earned the trust of the creator, Oh Il Nam. He was then given the opportunity to work outside the game, in the real world.
In the drama, Gi Hun chose the blue tile and he became a player. In several theories, it was said that if you choose the red tile, you become a game staff and if you choose blue, like Gi Hun, you become a player.
According to Hwang, this is not the case. The colors chosen were actually connected to an urban legend in Japan and Korea. According to the story, a masked spirit appears in a bathroom and gives the occupants to choose between red or blue toilet paper. But no matter what color was chosen, the ghost will still kill you. He said he chose these colors because of the scary story from the legend.
