Man Sentenced to Death After Smuggling Squid Game Copy Into North Korea
Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported that a man was sentenced to death after smuggling copies of the hit series Squid Game into the country, after high school students were caught watching the drama.
As per reports from RFA, the copies were smuggled in from China using USB flash drives. He is sentenced to death through firing squad.
From the RFA report,
A student who bought a drive received a life sentence, while six others who watched the show have been sentenced to five years hard labor, and teachers and school administrators have been fired and face banishment to work in remote mines.
Squid Game has specifically angered the dictatorship. Arirang Meari, a North Korean propaganda site, has stated that the survival drama depicts "the sad reality of a beastly South Korean society.
It is also reported that there is much anxiety over the fate of the high school students and there is a possible implication of more people into the investigation.
Netflix is not available in China, where the copy came from, but the drama has been pirated widely throughout the country, according to reports.
