My Thoughts on My Liberation Notes - Did they Get Liberated?

My Liberation Notes just ended, and it is one of the best dramas for me this year; very relatable and full of words to ponder on. The question is, were they at all liberated? Did our worship couple get liberated?

Well, it was an open-ended finale episode. But judging from when the drama started, when the Yeom siblings are always full of complaints and angst, this time they were smiling. Finally having that freedom from the things they wanted to escape from.

Gi-jeong finally not chasing love and finding someone who makes her smile, that rose on a soy sauce dish. That just shows that she can accept whatever love Tae Hun can give her at the moment. The stem may be broken, but she was able to do something about it. The same with their relationship, it may be kind of broken now, but they'll find a way to make it better.

As for Chang Hee, I think he was also liberated. He has always yearned for affirmation from his father, but he got it from his dad's new wife, when he did, he not make a big deal out of it.
The way he knows he's an adult now, because he can control what he says, how he speaks. He used to overshare, saying so much without even thinking.
The moment he chose his friend over business. That's liberation in itself. He always loved material things (Mr Gu's car, toilet with a bidet, etc) but he chose to stay and comfort his friend, knowing his business may suffer from it. I guess that gave him a new purpose in life, that's why he did not leave the room when he learned it's about being a funeral director.
As for our worship couple, they definitely found liberation.

The drama ended with Mijeong saying she felt so loveable. And reading her old journals made her realize she was loveable before, not the memory she had of her childhood. Feeling this in herself means she had been liberated from all the hate she has always felt for people who did her wrong. Remember she said that her life will remain boring?

She says she always hated people, but in the end she says all she feels is love. She even defended her ex and talked to him with composure, when she has always said that he hates him? That is liberation. Her realization that her exhaustion in life is because she lives her life just to prove how terrible someone is, now she's done with that.

The biggest liberation I think is Mr Gu, Gu Jagyeong himself. From the time he started worshipping Mijeong in Sanpo, I think his liberation has already started. But in the last episode, more scenes have shown this.

But as she told Mijeong, he does not want to be sober because people from his past comes to him, he is better drunk because be does not want hatred to consume his being. But she told him to welcome them and smile when they do. In the end he did, in the voice message he left to Hyeonjin, he said "I'll welcome you with open arms."

When he said that, that's when he decided he will be truly liberated. He takes his things (or money) and went out the door. The first sign of liberation? The 7 seconds of happiness when he saw the kid on the elevator.
The biggest sign of liberation? When he left that alcohol bottle on the side walk and walked away.
And that coin, that's the biggest symbolism of freedom for Mr Gu. It was kind of worthless (like a 25 centavo coin for us), it fell but did not go through the drain, it was there hanging on the edge, and someone picked it up. Much like Gu Jagyeong's life. He may feel worthless, he was basically a thug, if you know what he does, but he was hanging on, until someone picks him up and make him whole again. We know who that is, its Mijeong, of course.
At the end of the episode, we don't see them together. But we see Mijeong smiling at someone coming near her and we see Gu walking towards someone. He basically saying he's changing step by step, little by little, with someone who is full of love in her heart.

This drama had me since the beginning. It's slow paced but full of life's questions and lessons that we ourselves can relate to. We may also feel the same angst, anger and have the same circumstances, and in the end, we may want to liberated from these as well.

May the Sanpo siblings and the worship couple remind us that, life goes on. We can change. We can be liberated.
