20th Century Girl Takes Us Back to the 90s, with a Little Heartbreak on the Side

Just released on October 21, 20th Century Girl brings us back memory lane, complete with the heart break and pain of first loves.

Here we see the memories from the past, from dial-up internet, to pagers and payphones, the movie brings us back to when we first heard of  the so-called Y2K bug, 1999.

Now the story started when Yeon Du fell in love once again right before her heart surgery in the US. And who else to help her get to know her new-found love? Her best friend of course, Na Bo Ra. And she was passionate about learning everything about her crush Hyun Jin, reporting every detail through email. And she was keen on letting Yeon Du experience everything as if she never left at all.

Well, we might think of the movie as kind of cliche. You know, the love triangle trope and falling in love with your best friend's crush. But hey, this is Korean content and there's always something to look forward to, right?

You will fall in love with Kim Yoo Jung's portrayal of Bo Ra. She did everything right, doing anything for her friend and putting her above all else, even her feelings.

Who will not fall in love with Byeon Woo Seok's character, Poong Woon Ho? The best friend to the target Baek Hyun Jin, but already falling in love from the get-go?
And then there's Park Joong Woo's Baek Hyun Jin. The supposed target, who was starting to develop feelings for Bo Ra as well (or did he, really?). This is the love triangle we're kind of expecting, right?
Yeon Du, played by Roh Yoon Seo, was that friend. She was always taken cared of by Bora, and in due time, she knew what she had to do for her friend.
The movie starts off from the present, with Na Bora already in the 21st century. And we see her experiences seen as a backstory.

It was all good and you start reminiscing your own experiences in high school, of first loves and friendships. Until you get to the second half of the story, and everything becomes a painful reality: not all first loves progress..

We discover how Woon Ho and Bo Ra develops their feelings, but because of friendship, she cannot pursue. We see that love letter that was not delivered, and our heart starts to break. But then again, they were able to confess. And who knew this was the last time they get to see each other? Then our hearts start to break once again.

20th Century Girl is a fun yet poignant look at a heartbreak and pain that lasted years. That pain that does not end because there was no closure at all.

But in the end, when the 21st century arrived, our Na Bo Ra learned the painful truth and was able to learn that up until the end, it has always been her, Poong Woon Ho's 20th Century Girl.

Yes, it may be your usual story about friendship, high school and first love. But throw in that surprise at the end and we get something different.

20th Century Girl is a definite must-watch.
