Impossible Not to Get Hooked with The Impossible Heir - An Early Review

The premise of the drama in itself is quite intriguing. The opening scene on the very first episode will make you want to sit down and keep watching.

The Impossible Heir is a thrilling revenge drama about an illegitimate heir, Kang Inha (Lee Junyoung) and his intellectually gifted friend Han Taeoh (Lee Jaewook) who hatch a scheme to take over the family business and seize their spots at the top of society—only to be threatened by an equally ambitious woman who can derail their plans forever. We see these three characters living their lives and I feel heartache.

Kang InHa may look really tough but deep inside he just wants to feel a sense of belonging. His new chaebol family treats him as a nobody, only his bratty half-sister shows care and concern for him. Which may be why he was drawn to Han TaeOh, who escaped his poverty-stricken past through achieving academic excellence. Then there's Na HyeWon. Even if she was raised in a troubled environment because of a debt-laden mother, she was still able to get into the one of the best universities in Korea.

I love the relationship between TaeOh and InHa. At the start you may just see it as a partnership as they both needed each other to achieve a certain goal. But even so, the genuine care and brotherhood between the two was very evident through the years, even after a very rough start. And when the time came that TaeOh had to choose, he eventually chose InHa over HyeWon.
I rarely see very good chemistry between two male leads (best example Goblin, Descendants of the Sun, Alchemy of Souls) and Junyoung and Lee Jae Wook definitely has it. From the moment they had that boxing match up until the end, their chemistry is off the charts. Their compelling performances is what holds this drama together. The clingy InHa towards the very serious TaeOh,  they had us hoping nothing will ever come between them ever.

Then come HyeWon, played by Hong Suzu. The actress was in Lovestruck in the City and Sweet Home 2 but I don't remember her. This is her first major role so far. She's there, but I still don't feel her. I feel her character still undefined in a way. In her scenes with the 2 male leads, she does not stand out for me. She lacks emotional depth, if I might say. Maybe because she has less experience than the two. Anyway, we see both friends being drawn to her (as quite expected) and we think, there's that someone that will break them apart. I still hope not.

But the story line. That's the best part of this drama. At this point, I am not sure whether these three will be working together till the end, or a betrayal will happen in the near future. Given the mystery with the opening scene, I wonder how their plan will work out, or derail and how each of them will play a role in this happening.

Chaebol dramas are very common. Right now we have Wedding Impossible and Queen of Tears coming up. But each has a different story to tell. This one has revenge and betrayal and mystery written all over it. With a little romance thrown in it for fun. Add to that the families of these characters which gives depth to their portrayal.

This is a 12-episode drama, 2 episodes in and we already seen so many years have passed - from high school until the time they're now employees of KangOh Group. In that span of time we see their determination to succeed, their willingness to sacrifice personal gains over their shared goals. And that's what I'm looking forward to the most.
