South Koreans Will Be a Year or Two Younger Starting June 2023

Image
A new way of calculating South Korean age will be implemented next month as the calculation of age will be standardized. South Korean age computation is unique from the rest of the world. Everyone is considered 1 year old on the day they were born. Then another year is added every January 1. Even if the country is used to this, as the Korean age is used for social and cultural purposes,  there are complications when issues of age are discussed, which include army enlistment, voting, driving or legal drinking age.  But starting June 28, 2023, a new law will be implemented, so some will suddenly become younger. On December 8, 2022, the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea passed bills to amend the General Act on Public Administration and the Civil Act. The amendment aims to unify the three-age counting systems in the country. Source
