REVIEW: The Glory, 3rd Most Watched Non-English TV Show on Netflix and Here's Why Song Hye Kyo Deserves to be Praised for It
As of the latest global ranking released by Netflix, The Glory achieved the 3rd spot, 3 days after its release. And one of the main drivers for this success, is Song Hye Kyo herself.
I am so used to Song Hye Kyo in romantic dramas and melodramas, but in her latest offering, you see her as an unforgiving teacher out for vengeance. She ate and left no crumbs. This role is so different from what we usually see her in, and before the drama ends, you will cheer for her character and hope that she gets that justice she so deserves.
It was very glaring how Song Hye Kyo expertly captured Moon Dong Eun's persona in all of its uniqueness while resolutely keeping her own individuality. She exudes the anger that has grown inside of her over time as a result of ongoing abuse that has crossed emotional and physical boundaries. And she used that anger as a weapon to get back at everyone who did her wrong. She waited 18 years, carefully planning every little thing in her mind. And with allies along the way, she has executed that revenge. And we feel that sense of belonging, of being with her, her ally, someone who can help her put these people in their right place.
The Glory is such a masterpiece, a work full of emotions it touches every nerve, creating an emotional havoc inside. Song went into Moon's persona, giving her character life. Jung Ji So may have enacted all the bullying scenes, and it was heart-wrenching, you want to just go in there and take her out of the situation. But Song's portrayal of the victim, years after it happened, really resonates with you. Just look at her eyes, lifeless, yet full of anger and anguish.
I can't wait for the second part in March, just to see how she finally gets the justice she truly deserves.
